MARCOR OSH PROGRAM MANUAL24. Parenteral. Piercing of the mucous membranes or skinbarrier by a needle stick, human bite, cut, or abrasion.25. Potential Energy. A function of a height of an objectabove some datum plane. This datum plane is usually consideredto be where that object would come to rest if the restraintholding the object were released. For example, where the upperdie in a punch press is positioned if the restraining deviceholding the upper die in place was to be removed, the potentialenergy of the upper die would be converted into kinetic energyresulting in the upper die being propelled downward, coming torest on the lower die. This motion can cause a crushing, cutting, lacerating, amputating or fracture injury to anemployee's arm, hand or some other part of the body, whichoccupies the space between the dies.26.
