MARCOR OSH PROGRAM MANUAL 18003system members, shall be 42 inches plus or minus 3 inches abovethe walking/working level. Mid rails, screens, mesh,intermediate vertical members, or equivalent intermediatestructural members shall be installed between the top edge ofthe guardrail system <strong>and</strong> the walking/working surface so there isno opening greater than 19 inches. Toe boards (4 inches high)or other more effective systems shall be used to protect workersfrom falling objects such as tools or materials.b. Safety Net System. A mesh net extending a minimum of 8feet from the edge of the working surface, installed as close aspossible to the working level, <strong>and</strong> be able to withst<strong>and</strong> a weightof 400 pounds dropped from the highest exposed working surface.Consult 29 CFR 1910 or 29 CFR 1926 for minimum net extensiondistance, which can vary according to the potential distance offall.c. Personal Fall Arrest System(1) Composed of a full body harness, lanyard with shockabsorbing device, self-locking connectors, <strong>and</strong> anchorage system.All system components must be rated at 5000 pounds breakingstrength <strong>and</strong> compatible for use together as a system. Othersystems may include horizontal <strong>and</strong> vertical lifelines, orself-retracting lifelines. Anchorages for lifelines must beindependent of any anchorages used for suspended platforms,scaffolding, etc.(2) Personal fall arrest system cannot allow workerfree-fall distance to exceed 6 feet.(3) Marine Corps personnel will not use body belts dueto the potential to "fall through" the belt if turned upsidedown.d. Covers. Covers for holes in floors, roofs, <strong>and</strong> otherwalking or working surfaces must be able to withst<strong>and</strong> twice thetotal weight of workers, equipment, <strong>and</strong> materials that may beimposed on the cover at any time. The cover must be fastened toprevent slippage <strong>and</strong> marked "cover" or "hole" (except manholecovers or steel grates).18-7
