If suspected asbestos containing material isdiscovered <strong>and</strong> it is broken, chipped, or in friable condition(can be crumbled by h<strong>and</strong>), personnel will evacuate the area,seal the room to prevent entry, <strong>and</strong> immediately contactinstallation/unit APM.3. Work Protocol. The APM shall prescribe required workpractices for all cleanup <strong>and</strong> containment operations conductedby Marine Corps personnel. At no time may suspected asbestoscontaining material be dry-swept. Contractors shall be requiredto submit a health <strong>and</strong> <strong>safety</strong> plan detailing procedures theywill employ to protect Marine Corps personnel (plan must bereviewed by APM).15006. REQUIREMENTS1. Asbestos Controls in Work Center Environment. Basicprinciples for controlling asbestos hazards in the <strong>occupational</strong>environment include substitution with less hazardous materials,engineering controls (e.g., isolation, ventilation),administrative controls, <strong>and</strong> use of PPE. Employee rotation as ameans of keeping exposures below thePELS is prohibited. Employees involved in asbestos relatedactivities shall not eat, smoke, chew tobacco or gum, or applycosmetics in work areas.2. Traininga. Training <strong>and</strong> certification requirements are summarizedin table 15-1. The four classes of asbestos workers addressedin the table are:(1) Class I workers: Remove thermal system insulation(TSI) <strong>and</strong> surfacing Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) orPresumed Asbestos Containing Material (PACM).(2) Class II workers: Remove ACM, which is not TSI orsurfacing material.(3) Class III workers: Repair <strong>and</strong> maintain ACMincluding TSI <strong>and</strong> surfacing ACM <strong>and</strong> PACM.15-10
