Safety inspections provide comm<strong>and</strong>ers with atool to measure mission readiness <strong>and</strong> ensure <strong>safety</strong> concerns forpersonnel <strong>and</strong> equipment are identified <strong>and</strong> corrective actiontaken. During <strong>safety</strong> inspections two areas are identified:operational <strong>and</strong> infrastructure. Operational issues are areas inwhich a comm<strong>and</strong> can take corrective action; infrastructureissues are those areas in which outside assistance <strong>and</strong> fundingare required (e.g., building or electrical findings).7001. BACKGROUND. Ideally, an effective <strong>safety</strong> program willeliminate hazards before they contribute to a mishap. Toaccomplish this, the identification of hazardous conditions <strong>and</strong>unsafe acts before a mishap occurs is essential. Work center<strong>safety</strong> inspections are the most effective way of identifyingproblem areas before they result in mishaps. A properly managedinspection or program audit conducted by qualified <strong>safety</strong>professional can yield several benefits:1. Detect hazardous conditions <strong>and</strong> unsafe acts.2. Identify safeguards <strong>and</strong> precautions.3. Promote the OSH Program.4. Increase hazard awareness level of all personnel by focusingon particular areas of responsibility.5. Strengthen the working relationship <strong>and</strong> establish a commonpurpose among <strong>safety</strong> <strong>and</strong> workforce personnel.7002. DEFINITION OF SAFETY PERSONNEL1. CMC, Safety Division (SD). Serves as the HeadquartersMarine Corps <strong>safety</strong> entity to provide support, requirements, <strong>and</strong><strong>dir</strong>ection.7-3
