The major effect of alcohol when viewed at the population level relates to increased<br />

morbidity <strong>and</strong> mortality from injuries—usually affecting younger age groups. Alcohol<br />

also contributes to a somewhat lesser extent to degenerative diseases <strong>and</strong> to cancer. The<br />

major effect of tobacco is to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as many<br />

types of cancer.<br />

Biologic aspects<br />

Experimental <strong>and</strong> human data are beginning to clarify the damaging effect resulting<br />

from combined exposure to these two substances. In animal experiments, tissuespecific<br />

DNA alterations have been discovered after combined exposure to alcohol
