Stomach cancer<br />

Several studies have examined smoking <strong>and</strong> alcohol consumption as risk factors for<br />

gastric cancer (Kabat et al. 1993; D’Avanzo et al. 1994; Hansson et al. 1994; Vaughan<br />

et al. 1995; Ji et al. 1996; de Stefani et al. 1998; Chow et al. 1999, 40; Zaridze et al. 2000;<br />

Wu et al. 2001) (Table 36.3). Nearly all show that although smoking increases the risk<br />

of gastric cancer; alcohol, in contrast, unless consumed in large quantities, does not.<br />
