At the end of 2003, 83 countries have signed <strong>and</strong> five countries have ratified the<br />

WHO Framework Convention on <strong>Tobacco</strong> Control (ratification by 40 countries is<br />

required for the treaty to take effect). The support of country after country for the<br />

Framework Convention <strong>and</strong> its protocols will encourage other countries to enact or<br />

strengthen their tobacco control legislation <strong>and</strong> thus be part of the global movement<br />

for a tobacco free world.<br />
