PARTE TERCERA. ORTOGRAFÍA. SERÍA de desear que no hubiese mas reglas para Ja ortografía que Ja pronunciación. Aunque nuestra escritura no sea enteramente perfecta, puede sin temor asegurarse, que ninguna de Jas lenguas vivas, inclusa la italiana, nos lleva ventajas en esta parte. Porqué es la primera regla del ortografía castellana, según sienta el docto Lebrija, que asi tenemos de escribir como pronunciarnos, ¿pronunciar como escribimos. Nos desviamos pues diariamente de la etimología ajusfándonos á la pronunciación, y vamos corno de camino para conseguir este objeto. Las reglas de nuestra ortografía no pueden tener por lo mismo el carácter de permanentes y estables, sino el de transitorias. En la carrera que llevamos, quieren los unos que se proceda poco á poco, mientras otros prefieren llegar de un golpe al fin de Ja jornada. Yo pienso que conviene caminar con alguna pausa, porqué á Jas mismas personas ilus! radas desagradan y repugnan Jas grandes novedades ortográficas; y si se adoptasen muchas á la vez, inutilizaríamos cuantos libros hai impresos, ó sujetaríamos á todo el mundo á que aprendiese dos ó I res sistemas de ortografía; y ya vemos cuan difícil es que se sepa uno medianamente bien. Por tanto consideraré la ortografía española cual se usa al presente en las ediciones mas correctas, advirtiendo las variaciones que desde 1 S08 se han introducido, para que se lean sin embarazo los libros impresos antes de aquella época; y notando por fin las
