N. Enciu’s works contain a deep analysis of Census data from 1897. The
author studies the development of the rural population of Bessarabia in the
years 1918-1940, constituted by gender, age, marital status, ethnicity, religion,
occupation. Referring to commercial activities up to 1918, the author
concludes that most merchants had a different ethnic origin than the Romanian
one, fact pruved by the sources, in which (particularly in Chisinau)
appear more traders Hebrew, Armenian, Russian and other ethnic groups
others than Romanian.
The above historiography’s analysis shows the absence of dedicated
work in our particular research topic. Although this perspective approach to
history, which includes daily issues and mentalities, is still in the early twentieth
century European historiography, it remains practically uncharted in
Moldova. The studies about Chisinau, in most cases contain the summary
elements on that issue, dealing in a wider context and within broader chronological
aspects of the evolution of Chisinau in the early twentieth century.
These works reveal only the tangential moments of the problem, like daily
life in Chisinau, in the years 1900-1918, the city entered a period of intense
urbanization and modernization, requires a special study, which highlights
the peculiarities of this process.
The sources of the work. To achieve the objectives, which are the
reconstitution of the daily lives of residents of Chisinau, we had available the
archival documents from the early twentieth century, and the periodicals of
the time. The complexity of the tasks proposed and the diversity of sources,
we were determined to classify them in:
a) The documentary sources (the documents and official documents of
the period, published and unpublished archival documents);
b) The narrative sources (descriptions of the witnesses, memories);
c) The material sources (maps, drawings, pictures, portraits and vintage
photos);
d) The periodical press.
On the basis of our research are available the official documents issued
by the municipal authorities in the past century, preserved in the National
Archives of Moldova, which gave us the opportunity to highlight key the
moments in the evolution of daily life in the city of Chisinau. For us the
special interest collections of documents held in the fund no. 2 Канцелярия
