ties. They have attracted recruits heterogeneous, primarily in the provinces
which were under the rule of state government in the capital, but also in areas
beyond state borders.
According to statistics of the period from January 1, 1902 population
consisted of 131 Chisinau, 3 000 persons of both genders, while the county
was represented by 182,5 000 people. Most detailed data and more precise
about the number and composition of the population census contained the
imperial city in 1897, of these considerations, when we refer to this aspect of
the problem, we refer to that document. At this time, Chisinau county occupies
an area of 3 271.9 km², population density represent 85.47 inhabitants /
km and the total county population was 279,657, of which 144,625 men and
135,032 women. In Chisinau 108,483 people lived in total, 56,734 men and
51,749 women, 1361 and 1813 as temporary residents - foreigners.
A social and ethnic diversity. In this regard, Chisinau was quite heterogeneous.
I said what conditions it is and crystallized the ethnic and social
diversity usually in capital cities, and directly, in Kishinev.
The Imperial census of 28 January 1897, examining national composition of
the population of Chisinau, the mother tongue criterion, the situation was
as follows: first lay Jews, representing about 45, 93% of the total number
of inhabitants (the entire county Chisinau Jews represented only 19.48% of
total population). They were followed by Russian speakers (30.16%, while the
county Russians, Ukrainians and Belorussians constituted only 13.81% of total
population) and only in third place stood the local population, Moldovans,
which constituted 17.58% and 62.90% in the county town. Outside nationalities
already listed, Poles living in Chisinau in May (2.99%), Germans (1.17%),
Bulgaria (0.85%) and an insignificant number of Armenians (0.34%), Greece
(0.28%), Roma (0.13%), Turks (0.03%), etc.. At the same time, structured
according to the criterion of religious confession, Chisinau population was
divided as follows: Orthodox Christians and Jewish (edinoverits, according
to Census), representing 46.59% of the total number of inhabitants, while
the confession was 76.84% in the entire district of Chisinau. Christians were
followed by the Hebrew as a slight difference of 46.31% and 19.63% in
the county town. Among other religions found in the city, appears more
consistent Roman Catholics (3.54%), largely composed of ethnic Poles, but
there are believers of the old (2.05%), Lutherans (.89 %), Armenian Gregorian
(0.39%), Muslim (0.18%) and other Christian and non-Christian religions.
