Abstract
Immigrants including refugees made up 6.6% of the Danish population by the 1 st of January
2007. Research on the Danish immigrant population show higher rates of treatment for
physical illness and use of health care resources, and report a higher level of occurrence of
certain mental disorders than the general population. In comparison, the number of contacts
to the health care services due to PTSD is particularly higher.
Previously immigrants and refugees with PTSD have been neglected by the Danish general
psychiatric health care services, just as the present treatment capacity is insufficient in the
specialized, interdisciplinary treatment facilities. The effectiveness of the treatment and rehabilitation
programs has yet to be studied and documented.
This comprehensive report is the final outcome of enquiries on a literature review of the
scienti fic evidence on treatment and rehabilitation of patients with PTSD, with particular
reference to traumatized refugees, commissioned by the Region of Southern Denmark’s department
of psychiatry. The literature review is summarized in a Health Technology Assessment
(HTA) perspective, examining the elements technology, organisation, patient and economy.
The technology of interest consists of a specialized, interdisciplinary effort, here defined as the
therapy and assistance provided by psychologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists and social
workers. Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, organisation are by far more comprehensively
studied and documented than the other treatment approaches; just as treatment aspects
regarding the patient and economy are generally underexposed in relation to PTSD.
The evidence is summarized and concluded as far as the findings from the literature review
allow. Recommendations for the future are made with regard to assessment, treatment and
rehabilitation, research and documentation, diagnosing and patient courses, organisation as
for the rest of the HTA elements.
