If two suffixes of this group of stressable suffixes occur on the same word, the first one is<br />

stressed:<br />

tut-úver-iyor ‘s/he suddenly takes hold of [it]’<br />

4.3.2 UNSTRESSABLE SUFFIXES AND CLITICS<br />

There are a number of suffixes and clitics in <strong>Turkish</strong> which do not take stress and are prestressing<br />

except in certain cases where two of them occur within the same intonational<br />

phrase (see 11.2). These are:<br />

(i) The copular markers -(y)DI, -(y)mIş, -(y)sA (8.3.2), the converbial marker -(y)ken<br />

(8.5.2.2) and the generalizing modality marker -DIr (8.3.3):<br />

gel-sé-ymiş ‘if s/he had arrived’<br />

gid-ér-se ‘if s/he goes’<br />

otur-úr-ken ‘while sitting’<br />

oku-yacák-tır ‘s/he will most certainly read’<br />

(ii) The marker -(y)lA/ile ‘with’, ‘by’, ‘and’ (8.1.4):<br />

elíyle ‘with his/her hand’, ‘his/her hand and…’<br />

Alí’yle ‘with Ali’, ‘Ali and…’<br />

(iii) The derivational suffixes -(A/I)cIK, -CA, -CAsInA, -en, -(y)In, -lA (7.2.2.2), -leyin, -<br />

rA:<br />

úfacık ‘tiny’ kadínca ‘womanly’<br />

uçárcasına ‘as if flying’ tamámen ‘completely’<br />

kíşın ‘in winter’ yáyla ‘plateau’<br />

néreye ‘[to] where’ όrada ‘there’<br />

(iv) The following person markers (8.4):<br />

(a) the 1st and 2nd person markers belonging to group 2, i.e. -(y)Im, -sIn, -(y)Iz, -<br />

sInIz:<br />

uyúrum ‘I sleep’, ‘I will sleep’<br />

anlamíşsın ‘you have understood’<br />

(b) The 2nd person markers of group 4, i.e. -yIn, -yInIz, and those belonging to<br />

group 3, i.e. -sIn, -sInIz. (Note that the other -sIn, i.e. the 3rd person optative and<br />

imperative suffix (groups 3 and 4) is stressable):<br />

anlayásınız (diye) ‘(so that) you understand’<br />
