A process that facilitates or obstructs the occurrence of the situation expressed by<br />

the noun clause has as its main predicate a verb such as sağla- ‘ensure’,<br />

kolaylaştır- ‘make (it) easy (for)’, zorlaştır- ‘make (it) difficult (for)’, engelle-<br />

‘hinder’, önle- ‘prevent’.<br />

(81) İlkbahardaki yağmurlar [mahsulün bol olmasın]-ı sağladı.<br />

‘The spring rains have ensured [that the harvest is plentiful].’<br />

(d) Object of verbs expressing attitude:<br />

Some of the most commonly occurring verbs in this category are beğen- ‘like’,<br />

‘approve of’, kına- ‘deplore’, affet-/bağışla- ‘forgive’, hoş gör- ‘condone’:<br />

‘She couldn’t forgive [her husband’s lying to her].’<br />

(a) Emotional attitude:<br />

A -mA clause marked for dative or ablative case or with the instrumental marker<br />

can function as the oblique object of a verb of emotion (see 13.1.2.2, also<br />

24.4.5.2).<br />

(83) Mehmet, [Ali-nin kendisini çağır-ma-ma-sın]-a gücendi.<br />

Ali-GEN invite-NEG-VN-3SG.POSS-DAT<br />

‘Mehmet was offended by [Ali’s not inviting him].’<br />

(b) Causation:<br />

Dative-marked -mA clauses occur as oblique objects of verbs such as neden/<br />

sebep ol- ‘cause’, yol aç- ‘cause’, yardım et- ‘help’, müsaade et-/izin ver-<br />

‘allow’:<br />

(85) Sıcak havalar, [meyvalar-ın erken olgunlaşmasın]-a yol açtı bu yıl.<br />

‘The hot weather has caused [the fruit to ripen early] this year.’<br />

(86) Çocuklar [burayı toplamanız]-a yardım etsinler.<br />

‘The children should help [you to clear up in here].’<br />

(87) Ev sahibimiz [kedi ya da köpek beslememiz]-e izin vermiyordu.<br />

‘Our landlady didn’t allow [us to have a cat or dog].’<br />

(v) With genitive marking:<br />

Possessive-marked -mA clauses with genitive case marking on the verbal noun occur<br />

in the same kinds of structures as clauses with -mAnIn (24.4.2.1). If a possessive suffix is<br />

added to the verbal noun in a sentence such as (68) above the noun clause acquires a<br />

specific subject:<br />

(88) Ben-ce {[Ali-yi çağır-ma-mız]-ın anlam}-ı yok<br />
