This group of discourse connectives presents the result of a state of affairs described in<br />

the preceding sentence(s):<br />

(89) Ahmet’in ehliyeti yok. Dolayısıyla araba kullanamaz.<br />

‘Ahmet doesn’t have a driving licence. As a result he is not allowed to drive.’<br />

For dolayı as a postposition see 17.2.3.<br />

28.3.7 INFERENTIAL<br />

demek (ki) ‘that means’, ‘so’ stands at either the beginning or the end of the sentence in<br />

which it is located, and indicates that this sentence expresses an inference drawn from<br />

what has been said previously:<br />

(90) Görgü şahidi olarak mahkemeye çağırılmışsın. Demek sen de kaza<br />

yerindeydin!<br />

‘I hear you’ve been summoned as an eye witness. So you were at the scene of the<br />

accident as well!’<br />

(91) Orhan artık Amerika’ya iyice alışmış demek ki.<br />

‘So Orhan is well and truly settled in America, it seems.’<br />

28.3.8 TEMPORAL<br />

This group of discourse connectives includes önce ‘first’, sonra ‘then’, daha sonra<br />

‘later’, ondan/bundan sonra ‘then’, onun/bunun üzerine ‘upon this/that’, derken ‘just<br />

then’:<br />

(92) Ücretlerinde bir artış olmadı. Onlar da bunun üzerine grev yapmaya karar<br />

verdiler.<br />

‘They got no pay increase, upon which they decided to go on strike.’<br />

The informal connective derken introduces an event that comes as the climax of a process<br />

or series, or a situation that creeps up on someone without their realizing it:<br />

(93) Bütün gün ev baktık. Osmanbey, Şişli, Mecidiyeköy, Beşiktaş’ta dolaşıp<br />

durduk. Derken saat beş olmuş.<br />

‘We spent all day looking at flats. We went round and round Osmanbey, Şişli,<br />

Mecidiyeköy [and] Beşiktaş. And suddenly it was five o’clock.’<br />

28.3.9 CONDITIONAL<br />

The discourse connectives in this group express what conditionality, if any, attaches to<br />

one or other of the conjuncts.
