F.2 REGIONAL DEMOGRAPHY AND LAND USE<br />

The reference environment is located in a region that is mainly rural; the land is used<br />

chiefly for farming. The nearest communities are A, about 13 km southeast <strong>of</strong> the site, with<br />

a population(a) <strong>of</strong> about 2,000; B (population 400) about 6 km northwest; C (population<br />

about 1,000) about 8 km east; D (population 1,100) about 16 km southwest; and E (population<br />

3,000) about 16 km south. The closest large cities are F (population 40,000) about 32 km<br />

northwest and G (population 1,800,000) about 50 km southeast.<br />

The population within a 1-km radius (300 km 2 ) <strong>of</strong> the site is about 12,000. Within an<br />

80-km radius <strong>of</strong> the site (20,000 km 2 ) the population is about 2,000,000, <strong>of</strong> which about<br />

93% resides in the G metropolitan area (see Table F.2.1).<br />

In County A, and in County B just across the R River to the northeast, about 82% <strong>of</strong> the<br />

land is used for farming. The main crops in these two counties, which include all land<br />
