Report should state whether or not prior chemical or other disposal has ever been con-<br />

ducted on island sites and what the results were. (124)<br />

Response<br />

If selected as a viable option the island disposal concept would require in-depth R&D<br />

support <strong>of</strong> a thorough licensing process. Information regarding releases from such disposal<br />

sites, if they exist and if the geologic and hydrologic settings are sufficiently analogous,<br />

would be useful. However, there is little likelihood that information is in existance for<br />

waste deposited in selected hydrologic regimes deep within an island geology. No such<br />

information was used in the preparation <strong>of</strong> the final Statement.<br />

Issue<br />

Under Section 3.5.2.2, some estimate should be provided <strong>of</strong> the probability <strong>of</strong><br />

accidents on the sea lanes, which might lead to loss <strong>of</strong> the radioactive cargo. Cost est-<br />

imates should also be provided. (208-NRC)<br />

Response<br />

Estimates <strong>of</strong> sea transportation accident probabilities were not undertaken in this<br />

study. Data is undoubtedly available and could be assembled and interpreted. Work done in<br />

Europe, especially by the U.K. and in Japan in relation to spent fuel sea transporation, may<br />

be available. In the U.S. the American National Standards Institute working group,<br />

ANSI N552, is currently considering standards for the water transportation <strong>of</strong> radioactive<br />

(spent nuclear reactor fuel) materials. These standards were not complete at the time <strong>of</strong><br />

the final Statement.<br />

Detailed costs have not been estimated. For further discussion <strong>of</strong> cost analysis see<br />

Section 6.1.3.6 <strong>of</strong> the final Statement.
