Multiple barriers are intended to act independently to prevent waste migration and<br />

enhance isolation. The wording in the final Statement was changed to reflect this (see<br />

Section B.6 <strong>of</strong> the final Statement.).<br />

Concerning the proposed Swedish Containers, no appraisal is made as to whether this is<br />

felt to be a good design and an advancement on the state <strong>of</strong> the art. If it is, it should<br />

Section 5.1.2.3 <strong>of</strong> the final Statement presents a discussion <strong>of</strong> the Sweidish approach<br />

to waste package design. This section notes that the Swedish work did a great deal to pro-<br />

mote acceptance <strong>of</strong> the multibarrier waste package and that although the Swedish design may<br />

be somewhat more complex than others presently being studied, the Swedish designs have<br />

increased understanding <strong>of</strong> long term package performance.<br />

The proposed Swedish canister is not "highly" sophisticated; it is a simple copper can<br />

with lead fill. The engineered sorption barriers are not part <strong>of</strong> the canister but part <strong>of</strong><br />

the backfill buffer around the canisters. In the last reference it is not clear what "redox<br />

materials" are. (218-DOI)<br />

Response<br />

As noted above, final Section 5.1.2.3 presents a revised discussion <strong>of</strong> the Swedish<br />

approach to waste package design. The final Statement uses the terms waste package or waste<br />

package system when discussing the waste canister and the overpack material (See Sec-<br />

tion 5.1.2). Redox materials are materials that could influence the oxidation-reduction<br />

potential <strong>of</strong> the repository system.
