Mary J. Hammond<br />

Mrs. Mary Jane HAMMOND, 88, Akron, died Friday at 7 p.m. in Woodlawn hospital,<br />

where she had been a patient since Monday.<br />

<strong>The</strong> daughter of Albert and Francis COOK, Mrs. Hammond was born in Dark county,<br />

Ohio Jan. 1, 1871. She moved to Akron in 1889.<br />

On Oct. 5, 1891, she was married to Clement H. HAMMOND in Akron, where they<br />

owned and operated a store for several years.<br />

Surviving are six sons: Lloyd [HAMMOND], Rochester; Harold and Fred<br />

[HAMMOND], Akron; Paul [HAMMOND], Los Angeles; Jay [HAMMOND], Ionia, Mich., and<br />

Elmer [HAMMOND], Mishawaka; two daughters, Mrs. Mary WOLFLA, Morgantown, and Mrs.<br />

Pearl NEWCOMER, Rochester; a brother, <strong>The</strong>odore COOK, Sacramento, Cal.; two sisters, Mrs.<br />

Ethel C. BARRETT, New York city, and Mrs. Gertrude McCLUNG, Rochester; thirty-five<br />

grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.<br />

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Sheetz funeral home in Akron with the Rev.<br />

Harold CONRAD officiating. Burial will be in the Akron I.O.O.F. cemetery.<br />

Friends may call at the funeral home.<br />

Charles N. Stayton<br />

Charles Nelson STAYTON, R.R. 1, Culver, died at the age of 76 at his home at 4:30 p.m.<br />

Friday after suffering a stroke Monday. He had been in ill health for several years.<br />

Born Feb. 26, 1883, in Marshall county, he had lived near Culver most of his life. He<br />

was the son of Andrew and Susan HENDRICKS STAYTON.<br />

On April 12, 1902, he was married to Elva LARGE. He was a retired farmer and former<br />

employee of Culver Military Academy.<br />

Surviving are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Victoria WYNN, Culver, Mrs. Robert<br />

(Edith) HASLETT, Edwardsburg, Mich., and Mrs. Harry (Grace) CRAIG, R.R. 1, Bremen; two<br />

sons, Willard “Pete” STAYTON, Argos, and Charles STAYTON, Hanna; eighteen grandchildren;<br />

twenty great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Rebecca INKS, Bourbon.<br />

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Grossman Funeral home with the Rev. Albert<br />

VERMILLION of Darlington, Ind. officiating. Burial will be in the Poplar Grove cemetery.<br />

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.<br />

William Barnes<br />

William BARNES, 80, R.R. 2, Akron, died suddenly at 3 a.m. today in the Miller nursing<br />

home here after becoming ill Friday afternoon. He was spending a few days with his brother,<br />

Jacob [BARNES], at Lake Manitou.<br />

Born Aug. 5, 1878 in fulton county, Mr. Barnes had spent his entire life in the Akron and<br />

Athens communities. He was the son of Adam and Sarah WOODS BARNES and had been retired<br />

for several years.<br />

Surviving, besides the brother Jacob, are two other brothers, Roy [BARNES] of Akron<br />

and James [BARNES] of Wabash. A sister, Mae FERRINE, preceded him in death.<br />

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home here with<br />

the Rev. C. J. MOWRER of the Rochester Church of God officiating. Burial will be in the<br />

Nichols cemetery at Akron. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today.
