Ser
Jay Howard
A 22-year-old Denver, Ind. truck driver burned to death in the blazing wreckage of his
tractor-trailer early this morning after the outfit rammed a bridge and burst into flames on Ind.19,
four miles south of Mentone.
He was identified as Jay HOWARD, R.R. 5, Peru, who was driving for the Elvin Murphy
Trucking company of Denver.
State police and the Kosciusko county sheriff’s office said Howard was enroute from
Decatur to Mentone. The accident occurrd at 5:50 a.m. in Kosciusko county, a short distance from
the Fulton-Kosciusko county line.
Officers surmised that Howard fell asleept at the wheel of the northbound vehicle. The
tractor came loose from the trailer after hitting the south edge of an iron railing on the west side of
the bridge and careened into the creek that the bridge spans.
The tractor was enveloped in flames almost immediately. Officers said that Howard
apparently was not killed by the impact of the accident, but burned to death before he could escape
from the tractor.
The force of the crash against the iron railing broke the trailer loose and caused it to
travel to the highway on the north side of the bridge. It ended up across the road, blocking traffic.
Howard was the son of Harold and Louise PETRIE HOWARD, R.R. 5, Peru. He was
born in Peru on Nov. 5, 1935.
Surviving are the parents; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret HOWARD, Chicago;
two brothers, Laurence D. [HOWARD], Peru, and Donald L. [HOWARD], Triangle, Va.; three
sisters, Linda K. [HOWARD], at home; Mrs. James (Martha) GRIMES, Stevensville,
Newfoundland, and Mrs. William PEPPERS, Denver, Ind.
The body was to be removed from the Reed funeral home at Mentone to the Drake-
Flowers funeral home at Peru, where funeral arrangements will be conducted.
