Clarence Miller<br />

Clarence MILLER, 65, former resident of Rochester, was found dead in the basement of<br />

his home, 1051 Elmwood Avenue, Columbus, O., Monday evening by his wife when she returned<br />

from a trip downtown. He had not been in good health recently and had undergone two near<br />

nervous breakdowns in recent years but his condition had not been of a serious nature. He had<br />

given no indication of taking his own life.<br />

He was born June 12, 1894, and grew up in Rochester, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clem V.<br />

MILLER. His father was a former sheriff of <strong>Fulton</strong> county. His mother passed away at her<br />

residence, 1104 Main street, on Feb. 10. Clarence and his wife had returned to Rochester often<br />

during her illness and after her death. His mother’s estate has been estimated at near $500,000 and<br />

he was the sole heir. He graduated from Rochester high school in 1913 and from Purdue<br />

University School of Electrical Engineering four years later.<br />

He took a position with the Indiana Bell Telephone Company at Indianapolis and later<br />

was assigned to the Western Electric Company, Chicago, the Ohio Bell, Cleveland and during<br />

World War II was given several special assignments in eastern plants of the Bell organization.<br />

He was with the telephone utility for 43 years and retired on June 12. For the past 10<br />

years he was plant supervisor for the Southwestern area of the Ohio Bell. He also drew up their<br />

budget and planned future employment requirements. During his career he was recognized as an<br />

outstanding circuit engineer.<br />

He married Adele PFAHL of Cleveland, Nov. 11, 1935. <strong>The</strong>re are no children.<br />

Mr. Miller attended the Community church at Columbus and was a member of the<br />

Masonic Lodge. Being a recognized stamp collector, often serving as a judge at exhibits, he was<br />

active in the Collectors Club of New York and the Philatellatic Society. he was a member of the<br />

Professional Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Bell Pioneers and the<br />

Purdue Alumni Society.<br />

Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Dale Funeral Home with burial in the<br />

Greenlawh cemetery at Columbus.<br />

Oren S. Mackey<br />

Funeral services will be held in Whiting Friday evening and burial will be Saturday at<br />

1:30 p.m. in the Rochester I.O.O.F. cemetery for Orren S. MACKEY, native of this city, who died<br />

at a Gary hospital Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.<br />

Born in Rochester, he was the son of Horace C. and Lucy DUNLAP MACKEY and had<br />

attended school here. He had resided in Whiting since a young man, retiring from the Standard<br />

Oil Refinery company there several years ago. He was married in 1896 to Etta PRIEST, who died<br />

in 1956. Since his wife’s death, he had been living with his daughter, Mrs. John STOFKA,<br />

Hobart.<br />

Also surviving are two other daughters, Mrs. Carl SANDS, Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Jess<br />

CUNNINGHAM, Whiting; two sisters, Mrs. Mary HOFFMAN, Rochester, and Charlotta<br />

PALMER, Leiters Ford, and one brother, Dr. C. G. MACKEY, Logansport.
