yS HISTORY OF THE POPES. by the Pope's desire, a member of the Dominican order ; he was given as his titular church, that of the Order, S. Maria sopra Minerva, with apartments in the Vatican,^ where he was very soon initiated into official business.^ It was his duty to direct the affairs of the Pontifical States,^ but Car- dinals Reumano and Farnese were associated with him as his advisers in matters concerning the foreign princes, though in such a way that they were to work under his orders.^ Reumano fell ill at the end of April, and, to the Pope's great sorrow, he died on the 28th of that month,'' so that the sole charge of affairs fell upon the shoulders of Bonelli, all the more so as since March, Farnese and Vitelli had gradually fallen into the background.^ ^ The " Stanza nella galeria di Belvedere " reports an *Awise di Roma of March 9, 1566, which also states " fra pochi di fara facende come nepote." (Urb. 1040, p. 191, Vatican Library). Afterwards Alessandrino moved to the apartments of Borromeo ; see the *report of Arco of May 5, 1566. SPIRITUAL ARMS OF THE POPE. 79 Vitelli had become troublesome to the Pope because he wished to interfere in everything, and also because he was too intimate with Cardinal Boneili.^ He and Farnese were both of them too different in character from the Pope ever to be trusted advisers ; an example of the great divergence of their points of view may here be given. At the beginning of his pontificate Pius V. understood in such a literal sense the protection which Our Lord had promised to his Vicar on earth, that he would have hked to have done away with all human means of defence. When Vitelli and Farnese pointed out to him that a fortress of such im- portance to the safety of the Papal States as Anagni ought to be put into a better state of repair, the Pope repUed that the Church had need of neither cannon nor soldiers. Her arms were prayer and fasting, tears, and the Holy Scriptures, and he would prefer to follow in the footsteps of those Popes who had defended the dignity of the Holy See by spiritual arms. Moreover, there was no reason to fear that the Spaniards would seize Anagni, since Philip H. was allied to both the Emperor and France, and all three would defend comincia ad havere tutte le facende o poco manco." Bonelli received a monthly stipend of 100 ducats (see ibid. p. 235b.). Later on his revenues were greatly increased, so that he was able to help his brothers, towards whom the Pope showed himself very reserved (see TiEPOLO, 177). On December 12, 1568, BoneUi became camer- lengo, but resigned the office on May 10, 1570, in favour of L. Cornaro for 70,000 scudi, which Pius V. seized for the Turkish war ; the nephew was compensated with the abbey of S. Michele at Chiusi, and the priorate of the Knights of Malta.
