338 HISTORY OF THE POPES. convinced, deeply hating the Christians as they did, that they could make use of their knowledge of Christian affairs for felonious purposes among the Turks and infidels.^ It was said as early as July, 1566, that the Jews felt that under the stem regime of Pius V. it was no longer any use for them to remain in the Papal States. ^ A year later 300 Jews from Rome actually accepted the invitation of a renegade who claimed to have obtained from the Sultan the city of Tiberias and certain islands of the Archipelago for the purpose of colonizing them with members of the chosen people.^ It was reported in Rome in April, 1567, that the Pope intended to drive the " Hebrews," as they were called, from his dominions.^ In a bull of February 26th, 1569,^ Pius V. actually took this extrem.e step, which had previously been taken by Ferdinand the Catholic in 1492, and by Charles V. in Naples in 1539. In this edict the Pope first sets forth the grievances against the Jews.® Since the gravity of their offences was increasing every day, to the injury of the state, and since the Jews con- tributed nothing of importance to the common good, they 1 Laderciii, 1569, n. 78. AND THE JEWS. 339 must within three months leave the whole of the Papal States, with the exception of Rome and Ancona ; if any of them, after that period, were found within Papal territory, they were to forfeit their possessions and become the serfs of the Roman Church. The Jews left the Papal States in May, and went for the most part to Asia Minor. ^ Feliciano, the Archbishop of Avignon, had the courage, in a letter of April 6th, 1569, to intercede for the Jews in his diocese, on the ground that they had lent money to the Catholics in the war against the Huguenots, and that their exile would lead to disturbances. The Pope repHed that, according to the testimony of the Bishop of Carpentras, no decree had given so much satisfaction in the Venaissin for many years as the bull against the Jews.^ At the request of the syndics, however, he extended the time fixed for their departure until 1 Erler, loc. cit. 54. In various places the bull was either not obeyed at all or only for a short time ; Fabretti, Sulla condizione degli ebrei in Perugia, Turin, 1891, 9 seqq. Of the Jews in Rome it is stated in May, 1569 : *" Si dice che S.S. vuole che li Hebrei vadino ad habitare al Coliseo, onde per le quotidiane restrintioni questi poveri se ne vanno piii tosto che obligarsi a cosi dure novita " (*Avviso di Roma of May ij\, 1569, loc. cit. 76). At Bologna, where the Jews were enclosed in the Ghetto in 1566 (Giudicini, Miscell. Bologn., 56), several pious foundations were trying to get the house of catechumens left to them, on the ground that with the departure of the Jews there was no longer any need for it ; against this the governing body of the house pointed out in a *petition on April 13, 1569, that it was just the time when many Jews would be converted (Cod. Vatic, lat. 6184, p. 82, Vatican Library). In a *brief of March 26, 1568, Pius V. had given the catechumens of Bologna a synagogue which had come into the possession of the Apostolic Camera.
