him, through Alciati, that he must abandon all hopes of the
Papacy on this occasion, since he, Borronieo, was determined
to refuse him his support. Instead of keeping the whole world
waiting, to its great injury, let him rather act in a Christian
spirit, and join forces with Borromeo for the election of a good
Pope. In his reply to this the grandson of Paul III. referred
to the services rendered by the Farnese to the Borronieo ;
was thanks to his grandfather that Pius IV. had been made a
Cardinal, and he had become Pope by the personal help of
Farnese himself ; the present greatness of the Borromei was
the result of the pontificate of Pius IV. Since however the
Cardinal nephew was determined to make no recompense for
these services, he proposed four Cardinals, for whose election
he promised his support ; these were Ricci, Scotti, Dolera
and Ghislieri.^ Borromeo decided upon the last named, and
thus was Ghisheri assured of the necessary majority, and
more was accomplished in the two hours that followed than
had been effected so far in three weeks' hard work.^
In the evening the Cardinals went to Ghislieri's cell, and
almost by force and against his will, led him to the Pauline
