which enacted that the bishops-elect and the university
professors in particular must swear to the Tridentine pro-
fession of faith. 1 He perseveringly did all in his power to
have the decrees of Trent accepted and recognized every-
where. ^ He sent the decrees of the Council together with the
announcement of his accession to the throne to the ends of
the earth, as for example to the archbishops and bishops of
Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Venezuela, as well as to
Goa.3 He at once caused an exhortation to observe them
to be sent to Spain,* as well as to Hungary and Poland,^
at the same time repeatedly expressing his conviction that
