HIS ATTENDANCE AT FUNCTIONS. 59 It is said of him that throughout his pontificate Pius V. never failed to be present at any of the ecclesiastical functions prescribed by the ceremonial, even when he was ill.^ He gave everyone a striking example by the recollection and piety he displayed on those occasions. ^ At Christmas he first assisted at matins and mass, then said two low masses, after ^TiEPOLO 172.
