An *Avviso of March 20, 1568, states that for the fortification of the Borgo, besides the 50,000 scudi taken from the treasure in the Castle, Pius V. intended to impose a fresh tax " alia mola " ; Mons. di Narni supervised the works, which the Pope was anxious to hurry forward (Urb. 1040, p. 490)- An *Avviso of April 3, 1568, says • *" Si seguita la fortificatione di Borgo et Castello con tanta dilgenza che I'opera sara finita per tutto Giugno." {ibid. 499). PAINTERS EMPLOYED BY THE POPE. I27 Torquato Conti,^ and Paciotti^ were the engineers employed by the Pope. According to Catena Pius V. spent 341,800 scudi upon his building operations. ^ Of the painters employed by the Pope, among whom was to be found a Netherlander, Bartolomaeus Sprenger,* Vasari is the one most frequently mentioned. Towards the end of the ponti- ficate of Pius V. he sketched the great mural paintings which were to decorate the Sala Regia ; besides the pictures of the return of Gregory XI. from Avignon to Rome, no less than three paintings were to celebrate the victory over the Turks, but only that of the Battle of Lepanto had been finished when the Pope died.^ ^ See the *report of Cusano of May 18, 1566, State Archives, Vienna. * See the *brief of February 27, 1572.
