met with, however, was but small. Pius V. himself then
intervened with so much severity that it was said in Spain
that he wished to make an end of the Third Order. This
report was declared to be false in a special letter from the Pope,^
but the prescriptions of the Papal bull, later on mitigated by
Sixtus v., were certainly very drastic. The government of
the congregation was regulated, private property was pro-
hibited, enclosure was enforced, and obedience to the ordin-
ances of Carpi was prescribed.
Similar exhortations and ordinances were sent under Pius V.
to a number of religious comimunities. Such were the Knights
of the Cross, who had fallen into a bad state on account of
the system of commendams,^ and the Canons Regular of San
Salvatore, to whom a new General, visitor and procurator-
general were given.* Two Dominicans were sent to the
Camaldolese to satisfy themselves as to the conditions pre-
vailing in the order, and to take what steps were necessary ;^
new statutes, which paid special attention to the matter of
studies, received the Papal approval in 1571.^ Pius recommended
the monks of Vallombrosa to the care of Cardinals
