Rome also owes to Pius V. a number of foundations of great
public utility ;
an establishment for the manufacture of wool,
the continuation of the University buildings, the erection of
suitable quarters for sick prisoners near Tor di Nona, the
construction of the Via Alessandrina, and the Via Bonelli,
which still keep alive to-day his own name and that of his
secretary of state, and lastly the restoration of the Acqua
Vergine,^ by means of which Pius V. could boast that he had
restored to the city a good water supply. 2 At first the Pope
would hear nothing of fortitications, but the Turkish peril

Ibid. 1041, p. 268, an *Avviso di Roma of June 20, 1570 : On
Wednesday the Pope went to Salone to give orders " che
quell'acqua sia tirata in Roma sino insu la piazza della Rotonda
sicome e stato principiato da Pio IV." Ibid. 334b, an *Avviso
di Roma of September 2, 1570 : The
Pope went to the vigna and
visited the acqua di Salone, which now goes to the fountain of
Trevi. An *Avviso of September 9, 1570 (State Archives, Vienna)
reports : " L'acqua di Salone e condctta in Roma alia fontana
de Trevi e si tratta di condurla in piazza Navona."
