Carniglia was also instructed to exhort all the Cardinals and prelates to send away all the members of their households who held benefices with a cure of souls, ^ similar instructions having been already sent to all Spaniards holding such offices.^ This renewal of religious life was naturally not limited to Rome. At the beginning of 1571 four bishops were appointed to make a visitation of the dioceses in the Papal States, namely Pietro de Lunel of Gaeta for the Marches, Giovanni Francesco Sormanni of Montefeltro for Umbria and the Patrimony, Paolo Maria della Rovere of Cagli for the Romagna and Lombardy, and Vincenzo Ercolano of Sarno for the Campagna.^ They were to start at the beginning of Lent, and were especially to insist on the observance of the duty of residence, to regulate the granting of benefices, to see to the restoration of delapidated churches, and to examine into the proper distribution of revenues.^ Four Jesuits were appointed to accompany them to preach to the people and to act as their advisers.^ Sometimes the Pope himself acted 1 *Avviso of January 27, 1571, ihid. 12b.
