While the court of Paul IV. had numbered 421 nobles and
313 lesser officials, or 734 in all, with 247 horses, and Pius IV.
had increased this numl^cr to 533 nobles and 529 others, or in
all 1062 persons, with 358 horses, under Pius V. in 1571 the
total was 319 nobles and 282 others, or in all 601 persons, with
161 horses.^
In spite of all this he did not desist from his labours for
the reform of the court in 1568 and 1569. We constantly
hear either of an exhortation addressed by Ormancto to the
chamberlains in the Pauline Chapel,- or that he was employed
in other ways on the reform of the court, ^ or that the curiosity
of Rome on the subject of a secret consistory had led men to
guess that it was concerned with the reform of the apostohc
palace.* Further regulations were also issued ; thus at the
beginning of 1568 the Pope insisted that all the members
of his household should reside in the Papal palace, and that
the gates should be shut at night. ^ Then came the order that
