hopes of the tiara, to which he had been so near.^ From
some of the passages which Ranke (Papste, I., 302; III.,
86* seqq.) and Gnoli (Vittoria Accoramboni, 245) have quoted
from the autobiography of Santori, it is possible to form an
estimate of his importance. Very valuable therefore was the
publication of the complete work by Cugnoni in the Archivio
delta Societa Roniana, XII. and XIII., based upon two copies
in the Corsini Library, Rome. In these the biography only
goes as far as- 1592. Whether the codex of the Albani Library
which was used by Ranke contained more cannot be gathered
from the data given by the Berlin historian, nor can the ques-
tion now be decided, since the Albani Library perished in a
storm, together with the vessel which was conveying it to
Prussia. Another copy of the autobiography, to which my
attention was called by my deceased friend, Prof. A. Pieper,
is to be found in the Altieri Library, Rome, Cod. 22-C-13.
but this copy too ends with 1592. Fortunately we have at
our disposal various other sources for the ten missing years;
of some of these we shaU treat in the next volume. Here
we can only take into consideration those which belong to
the time of Pius V. These are in the first place detailed and
valuable notes on the consistories in which Santori took
part. This " Diario consistoriale " of Santori was edited by
Tacchi Venturi in Studi e documenti XXIII.-XXV., and
is characterized by so great accuracy that it is sufficient here
to refer to the notes of that distinguished historian. It has
escaped the notice of Tacchi Venturi that there is also a
copy of the " Acta Concistoriali descripta ab em. Santorio
Sanseverino," given by Cardinal Siciliano di Rende, Archbishop
of Benevento. Cf. Carini, Atti Concistoriah dal 20
maggio 1570 al 18 dicembre, 1604, Rome, 1893. A passage
which is there included on p. 9, on the consistory of March 17,
1572, is missing in Tacchi Venturi.
In his autobiography (XIII. , 153) Santori also mentions
his " Libri deUe mie private udienze." I have found this
hitherto unknown source in the Papal Secret Archives, where
it is to be seen in Arm. 52, t. 17 seqq. I give here the more
important passages concerning the audiences of Santori with
Pius V.
