Canisius was ordered to assist him.^ The work of Hoffaeus
was published at DiUingen at the beginning of 1568, with an
introduction by Cardinal Truchsess.^ The Pope also en-
trusted to the Jesuits the French translation of the Catechism.^
He placed the work of preparing the Polish version in the hands
of Cardinal Hosius of Ermland,^ at the same time warning
him to avoid a notable defect in the first Latin edition, which
defect was also avoided in the German translation ;^ the first
publishers had been careless in the matter of its division into
chapters and sections. The Catechism met with difficulties in
Spain. The permission which had already been given to
print it there/ in spite of the privilege granted to Paulus
Manutius, was withdrawn by the Pope'' when certain Spanish
theologians took it upon themselves to find fault with a certain
equivocal passage in the Catechism.^ Cardinal Espinosa
had been charged with the preparation of a Spanish trans-
lation, which was made by Funtiduena, but the censors ex-
pressed the view that it would be wiser to give up all idea of
any translation into the vernacular.^
