238 HISTORY OF THE POPES. of a noble family at Milan, the fifteen year old Sauli knocked one day, dressed in cloth of silver, at the doors of the Barnabite convent in that city, and asked to be received into the Order. In order to test his firmness of purpose, he was ordered to go in broad daylight, with a cross upon his shoulders, to the market place and there preach a sermon on penance. Sauli did as he was told, and found men ready to listen to him, which is certainly a striking proof that, in spite of all their licentious- ness, a true Christian spirit was still to be found in the great cities of Italy. Ordained priest, this young man, who was so full of talent, was first given a cure of souls at Pavia, where he also taught philosophy and theology ; in 1567 he was elected General of his Order, and in 1570 was made Bishop of Aleria in Corsica by Pius V.^ Sauli found appalling conditions existing in the island. After the insurrection of Sampieri (died 1567) the country had become a desert, the people greatly reduced in numbers, and in a state of absolute barbarism. Pestilence and famine, too, were rife, agriculture was at a standstill, and men sub- sisted on acorns and herbs. Filippini, the historian of Corsica, gives the names of sixty places which were laid waste and entirely deserted ; within a period of thirty years 28,000 murders had been committed.^ After his arrival in the island Sauli wrote to Borromeo that in his whole diocese he could not find two habitable rooms, and that he had not the materials to build even a Capuchin's cell. In his episcopal city only the walls of the cathedral and a fort were standing, everything else had been destroyed by fire and pillaged. For the time being, therefore, Sauli took up his residence at Corte, and courageously began his episcopal labours. The means by which he sought to repair the religious devastation were those recommended by the Council of Trent. ALESSANDRO SAULI. 23Q duties, he established a seminary, urged catechetical instruction, and with incredible privations and labour carried out an episcopal visitation. Time after time he fell ill, as the result of his toil in that pestilent climate, but he persevered none the less. In the most desolate part of his diocese, at Argagliola, his fellow workers deserted him, and left him alone at his post. Besides the duties of his episcopal office he under- took all the labours of a simple priest ; in the seminary he himself delivered the lectures, and on his journeys he himself taught the catechism, visited the sick and heard confessions. His influence over the people was so great that, in the quarrels which were always breaking out, he dared to throw himself between the combatants, in order to prevent the shedding of blood, and thus to obviate those consequences which, on account of the appalling prevalence of the vendetta, followed upon a marder. He continued his unwearied activities for more than twenty years, until Gregory XIV. in 1591 trans- lated him to the see of Pavia, where he died in the following year. Pius X. canonized him in 1904. Pius V. had his part in the reform of Corsica by addres.sing briefs of encouragement to Alessandro Sauli and the other four bishops of the island, in v/hich he strongly urged upon them above all things the religious instruction of the common people, the reform of the clergy, and the strict observance of the Tridentine decrees.^ He exhorted the Republic of Genoa to assist the Corsican bishops in their laborious task.^ Just as Sauli, Uke the Pope himself, had come from a rehgious Order, so was it to fall to such bodies in the future to take an immense part in the renewal of ecclesiastical life. Pius V. fully realized the importance of this, and from this conviction sprang his anxiety to give back their full vigour to these valuable instruments of reform. ^ Briefs of May 4, 1569, onwards, in Laderchi, 1569, n. 81 seq.
