however, are proved by the records in its archives. He not
only took care that the new buildings made good progress,
but he also saw to it that the internal requirements of the
University were met by efforts to remove the abuses by reason
of which its financial affairs had fallen into a state of confusion.
If he was not completely successful in this, it is beyond question
that his ordinances laid the foundations for the subsequent
development of the " Sapienza " just at the time when the
other Italian universities were beginning to lose their former
splendour. The Pope showed what an interest he took in the
affairs of the University by several times presiding in person
at the meetings of the commission of studies formed by Julius
III.i
The number of the professors at the Roman University,
which had been 34 in 1536, was increased to 37 in 1568 ;2 not
a few of them were men of great distinction and repute, such
as the jurists, Girolamo Pariseti and Camillo Plauto, the
physicians, Francesco Ginnasi, Ippolito Salviano, and above
aU, Marc Ant. Muret and Silvio Antoniano.^ What a change
had taken place in men's ideas is characteristically shown
by the decision of the commission of studies on October i6th,
1569, to substitute for the formula, Quod honum faustum'
felixque sit, which had been placed at the head of the register
in the time of Leo X., the words, In nome delta santissima e
