424 HISTORY OF THE POPES. speaks of him as the principal writer on Pius V. and recently Premoli (Barnabiti, I., 332) describes his life as the best, this is due to his better and more skilful arrangement of his matter and to his good latinity. It added a great deal to the popularity of Gabuzio's biography that the BoUandists included only his account in the Acta Sanctorum, since it was suited to that purpose as having more definitely the character of a saint's life than that of Catena.^ All the later biographies of Pius V. have tended in that direction. Without any pretence to absolute completeness, we here given in chronological order the best known of these works : 1. Archangelus Caraccia de Ripalta O. Pr., Brevis enarratio gestorum S. P. Pii P.
