things had received the approval of the Popes, and rested
upon the authority which Ignatius enjoyed among his fol-
lowers as a saint and a man enlightened by God, but now these
two pillars on which the Order rested had been severely shaken
when Pius V. withdrew the concessions of his predecessors,
and declared an essential point in the conception of the founder
to have been a mistake. ^ The enemies of the Order made
the most of this reform o-f Pius V. ; the Pope, so they said, is
opposed to the Jesuits, he intends to change the Order com-
pletely, or to suppress it,^ etc.
In reality Pius V. was in no sense hostile to the Society
of Jesus. He valued their services,^ endowed their colleges
with revenues,'* added to their privileges,^ and helped them in
