however, he was not informed until he was actually on the
gallows, and there showed himself to be steadfast in his pro-
testations of repentance.^
Much more notorious than Carnesecchi and Bartoccio was
Antonio della Paglia da Veroli, or as he preferred to call
himself in ancient Greek form Aonio Paleario, a professor of
belles lettres at Siena, Lucca, and after 1555 at Milan, who,
especially at a later date, was held up as a martyr and a saint
of the Protestant faith.- The works of Paleario, a didactic
poem on the immortality of the soul, and various discourses
and letters, show him to have been a talented humanist ; a
satirical work against the Papacy, which was only printed
after his death, but had been sent to Germany by Paleario in
1566, belongs to the time while he was still at Siena, and proves
that he had then thrown himself headlong into the cause of
