the Via Aureha.^
Pius V. once declared that the Popes ought to rejoice the
world, not so much by their buildings as by their virtues,
and accordingly his building operations in the city were
confuied to what would either serve some religious purpose
or would be for the public utility. ^
To the former class belong the completion of S. Maria degli
Angeli,^ S. Maria in Traspontina,* and the ceiling of the
Lateran basilica,^ the building of SS. Domenico e Sisto and
the adjoining convent of Dominican nuns on the southern
slope of the Quirinal,^ the Palace of the Inquisition,' the erec-
