a pre-modern outlook. Talk of second nature can invoke everything implied by<br />
the modern concept of Bildung, including what permits us to value distinctive<br />
personality. (McDowell, 2002: 296)<br />
In sum, the idea of Bildung has a twofold relevance: on the one hand, it<br />
helps to clarify the reliability of the moral agent, as it is understood in the<br />
light of virtue ethics; on the other hand, and because of its individualist and<br />
liberal connotations, it allows us to avoid strong forms of communitarianism<br />
(like “majoritarianism”).<br />
