Notable Extreme Temperature Events for Region L<br />

• Summer 2012: A large high pressure area settled over <strong>the</strong> Central High Plains resulting in<br />

high temperature records being tied or broken in Goodland, Hill City and o<strong>the</strong>r Kansas<br />

towns. In Topeka, <strong>the</strong> year of 2012 was ranked as <strong>the</strong> hottest on record. The average<br />

temperature from June through August was <strong>the</strong> 9 th warmest on record and just a degree<br />

cooler than 2011. High temperatures averaged to be <strong>the</strong> 3 rd warmest on record, trailing <strong>the</strong><br />

Dust Bowl years of 1936 and 1934. Topeka had 24 days w<strong>here</strong> <strong>the</strong> temperature was at least<br />

100 degrees, which ties for <strong>the</strong> 6 th most of any summer. The summer of 2012 was also <strong>the</strong><br />

3 rd hottest summer on record for <strong>the</strong> contiguous U.S. since recordkeeping began in 1895.<br />

• June 2009—The Kansas City, Kan. Fire Department responded to a number of heat related<br />

calls. The Fire Department was dispatched to <strong>the</strong> Wyandotte County Courthouse on a case<br />

ofheat exposure and <strong>the</strong> Unified Government's Fleet Center at 50th and State on a case of<br />

possible heat stroke. Officials also determined high temperatures may have been <strong>the</strong> cause<br />

of death for two elderly people in <strong>the</strong> 2500 block of Stewart Avenue (Kansas City Kansan,<br />

June 23, 2009).<br />

• August 1, 2006—Oppressive heat and humidity continued from July...with heat indices in<br />

<strong>the</strong> 105 to 115 degree range through August 2nd.<br />

• July 29, 2006--Oppressive heat and humidity drove heat indices into <strong>the</strong> 105 to 115 degree<br />

range, from July 29th through July 31st.<br />

• July 15, 2006--Oppressive heat and humidity drove afternoon and early evening heat<br />

indices into <strong>the</strong> 105 to 115 degree range, from July 16th through July 20th.<br />

• July 21, 2005--Oppressive heat and humidity was observed across <strong>the</strong> area from July 21st<br />

to July 25th. Afternoon heat indices ranged from 105 to 110 degrees. A 78 year old female<br />

from Bonner Springs in Wyandotte county died from heat related causes on July 23rd.<br />

• August 24, 2003--High temperatures and humidity caused heat indices to reach <strong>the</strong> 105<br />

degree range<br />

• August 17, 2003--High temperatures and humidity caused heat indices to reach <strong>the</strong> 105 to<br />

110 degree range.<br />

• July 26, 2003--Afternoon heat indices ranged from 103 to 106 degrees, from July 26th<br />

through July 27th.<br />

• July 14, 2003--Oppressive heat and humidity over extreme eastern Kansas from July 14th<br />

through July 18th. Heat indices reached 110 degrees<br />

• August 9, 2001--Excessive heat and humidity again was observed over eastern Kansas on<br />

August 9th. Afternoon heat indices ranged from 105 to 110 degrees.<br />

• August 1-5, 2001--Excessive heat and humidity dominated <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r across eastern<br />

Kansas. August 1st through August 5th. Afternoon heat indices ranged from 105 to 113<br />

degrees.<br />

• July 17-24, 2001--Excessive heat with afternoon heat indices 105 to 110<br />

degrees...dominated <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r across eastern Kansas from July 17th to July 24th.<br />

• December 10-31, 2000--Arctic air gripped nor<strong>the</strong>ast Kansas for <strong>the</strong> final 3 weeks of<br />

December. Except for a few hours on <strong>the</strong> 15th and 16th, temperatures remained below<br />

3.91
