This hazard can become more serious when combined with a utility/infrastructure failure or<br />

winter storm hazard. Sometimes this hazard contributes to <strong>the</strong> infrastructure failure, such as<br />

overloading of <strong>the</strong> power grid during hot summer months. Severe temperatures could impact <strong>the</strong><br />

agriculture industry statewide.<br />

Historically <strong>the</strong> highest temperatures in Region L occur in June, July, August, and September of<br />

every summer. T<strong>here</strong>fore, <strong>the</strong> majority of direct and indirect exposure to excessive heat that<br />

has caused fatalities also occurs during <strong>the</strong>se months.<br />

T<strong>here</strong> is greater elderly population risk in <strong>the</strong> urban counties of Johnson, Sedgwick and<br />

Shawnee, but overall <strong>the</strong> State of Kansas has a higher than average elderly population. The two<br />

ages <strong>the</strong> most vulnerable to temperature extremes are individuals 65 years and over, and<br />

individuals under 5 years of age. The following table reflects <strong>the</strong> percentages of <strong>the</strong>se two age<br />

groups by jurisdiction within <strong>the</strong> Region. Townships were not included due to <strong>the</strong> sampling error<br />

size which was not deemed a true reflection of <strong>the</strong> data required. The following table shows <strong>the</strong><br />

combined vulnerability for <strong>the</strong> participating jurisdictions within <strong>the</strong> region according to <strong>the</strong><br />

Census Bureau:.<br />
