• Lightning can, and does, strike<br />

unaware in areas miles from, and<br />

outside, <strong>the</strong> actual storm area.<br />

Research areas countywide, acquire<br />

and install lightning detectors in<br />

areas as needed and identified.<br />

Conduct periodic site visits to<br />

hazardous <strong>material</strong>s (Haz-Mat)<br />

critical facilities for familiarization<br />

with <strong>the</strong> facility and to determine site<br />

capabilities and limitations for<br />

response. Wyandotte County has<br />

numerous Hazardous Materials<br />

storage / usage facilities that could<br />

require emergency response at any<br />

time. As with most incidents—Time is<br />

of <strong>the</strong> essence; however, Time is<br />

even more important when dealing<br />

with <strong>the</strong> dangers in<strong>here</strong>nt in Haz-Mat<br />

issues. Local responders conduct<br />

periodic site visits to hazardous<br />

<strong>material</strong>s critical facilities to<br />

familiarize <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong><br />

facility and its capabilities and<br />

limitations.<br />

Partner with local school districts to<br />

ensure <strong>the</strong>y have coordinated, wellprepared<br />

plans for school<br />

evacuations and sheltering-in-place.<br />

Wyandotte County is subject to many<br />

potential hazards. Some of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

would require evacuation of<br />

personnel to a safer place or<br />

sheltering <strong>the</strong>m in place. Providing<br />

for <strong>the</strong> health, safety and welfare of<br />

children, teachers and staff are a key<br />

concern. Partner with local school<br />

districts to ensure <strong>the</strong>y have wellprepared<br />

plans for school<br />

evacuations and sheltering in place.<br />

Assist <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>ir planning process<br />

by <strong>review</strong>ing <strong>the</strong>ir current plans and<br />

providing suggestions for potential<br />

revisions.<br />

Develop adequate communications<br />

systems among and between<br />

disaster response agencies and <strong>the</strong><br />

EOC. Wyandotte County is subject<br />

to many hazards requiring responses<br />

from multiple disaster response<br />

agencies. For an effective response,<br />

<strong>the</strong>se agencies need to be able to<br />
