Administer, as well as eight city council members from <strong>the</strong> four wards in Merriam. City<br />

Departments are Administration/Finance, Community Development, Fire Department, Municipal<br />

Court, Parks & Recreation, Police Department, and Public Works Department. As a part of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se departments <strong>the</strong>y have filled positions of building code official, building inspector,<br />

engineer, development planner, public works official, emergency management coordinator, and<br />

an NFIP floodplain administrator.<br />

Land Use and Development Trends<br />

In 2010, <strong>the</strong> population of Merriam was 11,003, which reflects a loss of 3 people since <strong>the</strong> 2000<br />

census. The land area of <strong>the</strong> city is 4.32 square miles, which makes for a population density of<br />

2,547 people per square mile.<br />

The City of Merriam is land-locked which restricts <strong>the</strong>ir development trends, however, <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

projected development on W 67 th Street and Interstate 35 for retail and auto dealerships in<br />

Merriam Point, and at Merriam Village at <strong>the</strong> intersection of Johnson Drive and Interstate 35,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are plans for construction to house IKEA, and o<strong>the</strong>r retail and restaurants.<br />

Funding opportunities for <strong>the</strong> City of Merriam to fund mitigation activities are as follows.<br />

The City of Merriam has enacted <strong>the</strong> Project Impact, for <strong>the</strong> NFIP program, as well as a public<br />

education/information program geared toward area 5 th graders called Aerial Andy.<br />
