Kansas Department of Transportation<br />

Corridor Management Program - The purpose of this program is to balance traffic and access<br />

management with land use management to protect public safety, public investment in <strong>the</strong><br />

highway system, and private investment in property development on adjacent lands. The goal of<br />

corridor management is to create and preserve safe, efficient, and economically viable<br />

transportation corridors.<br />

Transportation Enhancement Program - This is an annual competitive Federal Transportation<br />

Enhancement funded program that can be used for transportation enhancement activities that<br />

include environmental mitigation to address water pollution due to highway runoff or reduce<br />

vehicle-caused wildlife mortality while maintaining habitat connectivity.<br />

Kansas Forest Service<br />

Community Forestry Program - This program provides assistance, education, and support to<br />

communities and municipalities in organizing urban and community forestry programs,<br />

identifying resource needs, setting priorities of work, and training city employees<br />

Rural Forestry Program - Professional foresters provide “on-site” forest management and agro<br />

forestry analysis and recommendations through inventory of forests, woodlands and<br />

windbreaks.<br />

Conservation Tree Planting Program - The tree-planting program provides tree and shrub<br />

seedlings for conservation plantings to establish forests, woodlands and shelterbelts ant to<br />

mitigate loss of forestland.<br />

Environmental Education and Financial Assistance - The Kansas Forest Service provides a<br />

variety of publications, field days and workshops all available on <strong>the</strong> Web at<br />

www.kansasforests.org.The Kansas Forest Service administers <strong>the</strong> Volunteer Fire Assistance<br />

cost-share grant program that provides financial assistance to fire departments. Such programs<br />

as <strong>the</strong> USDA conservation programs provide for incentives to protect and implement forestry<br />

practices through <strong>the</strong> Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), <strong>the</strong> Cooperative<br />

Conservation Partnership Initiative, <strong>the</strong> Continuous Conservation Reserve Program and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

programs are available to landowners.<br />

Firewise Program - The Kansas Firewise program offers prevention <strong>material</strong>s for homeowners<br />

to reduce <strong>the</strong> threat of wildland fire in rural and high-risk areas. T<strong>here</strong> is currently only one<br />

Firewise community in Kansas.<br />

Forest Health Program - This program monitors <strong>the</strong> impacts of insects, diseases, drought,<br />

flooding and o<strong>the</strong>r health issues in forests, woodlands, windbreaks and conservation tree<br />

plantings by providing diagnosis and control recommendations and mitigation and planning for<br />

Emerald Ash Borer, Asian Bush Honeysuckles and o<strong>the</strong>r invasive species.<br />
