City of Prairie Village<br />

Prairie Village became a city of <strong>the</strong> first class in 1957. It was <strong>the</strong><br />

vision of <strong>the</strong> late J.C. Nichols to create a planned community of<br />

beautiful homes and shopping centers. Prairie Village is a<br />

land-locked, fully developed suburban city in nor<strong>the</strong>astern Johnson<br />

County.<br />

Prairie Village operates under <strong>the</strong> Mayor and 12 city council<br />

members form of government. The City Departments provide<br />

services in Management, Planning and Administrative Services,<br />

Public Works, Public Safety, Municipal Justice, Parks and<br />

Recreation, and Community Programs. The Prairie Village Police<br />

Department provides police protection services for Prairie Village<br />

and Mission Hills. Fire protection is provided by Consolidated Fire<br />

District No. 2<br />

Land Use and Development Trends<br />

According <strong>the</strong> 2010 census, <strong>the</strong> City of Prairie Village has a population of 21,447 people, a loss<br />

of 625 people since <strong>the</strong> 2000 census. The land area is 6.7 square miles, and <strong>the</strong> population<br />

density is 3,201 people per square mile. The population is stagnant, making development a low<br />

concern.<br />
