City of Ola<strong>the</strong><br />

Ola<strong>the</strong> is located in <strong>the</strong> middle of Johnson County and is<br />

<strong>the</strong> County seat. The City was <strong>found</strong>ed in 1857. The<br />

name “Ola<strong>the</strong>” is derived from <strong>the</strong> Shawnee Indian word<br />

“beautiful” because of all <strong>the</strong> wild flowers growing in <strong>the</strong><br />

area.<br />

Ola<strong>the</strong> voters selected a modified mayor-councilmanager<br />

form of government. The 7 member City<br />

Council hires <strong>the</strong> city manager who is responsible for<br />

administering <strong>the</strong> city business. City Departments<br />

are City Clerk, City Council, Development Services, Fire, GIS/Maps, Human Resources, Legal,<br />

Municipal Court, Municipal Services, Parks & Recreation, Police, Public Works, and Strategic<br />

Financial Management.<br />

T<strong>here</strong> are several major highways that crisscross <strong>the</strong> City including Interstate-35 (which divides<br />

<strong>the</strong> City), K-10, K-7, and K-150 (locally known as Santa Fe Drive). For outdoor enjoyment, <strong>the</strong><br />

City has two large public lakes, Lake Ola<strong>the</strong> and Cedar Lake, and smaller lakes at Waterworks<br />

Park and Southlake Park.<br />

Land Use and Development Trends<br />

In 2010, <strong>the</strong> population of Ola<strong>the</strong> was 125,872, and increase of 24,292 people since <strong>the</strong> census<br />

of 2000. The land area of Ola<strong>the</strong> is 54.16 square miles, and <strong>the</strong> population density is 2,324<br />

people per square mile. Ola<strong>the</strong> is a quickly growing city and housing developments, building<br />

and shopping developments are on <strong>the</strong> rise. Johnson County has an intense screening<br />

program before any new development can be done, to include ensuring <strong>the</strong> floodplain is<br />

protected.<br />
