Location<br />

Region L is vulnerable to outbreaks causes by viruses and bacteria due to <strong>the</strong> dense population<br />

base, which increases <strong>the</strong> amount of institutional settings such as dormitories, daycares, and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r avenues w<strong>here</strong> groups of people are in contact, which can lead to <strong>the</strong> spread of diseases.<br />

Previous Occurrences<br />

• During <strong>the</strong> summer of 2012, <strong>the</strong> planning area saw <strong>the</strong> closing of outdoor pools early due to<br />

an outbreak of a highly contagious disease caused by <strong>the</strong> cryptosporidium parvum.<br />

Cryptosporidium is a waterborne disease that can cause gastrointestinal illness associated<br />

with diarrhea.<br />

• The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment reported a community-wide<br />

outbreak of Pertussis. 485 cases reported in Johnson County as of December 2012.<br />
