lightning. Citizens need to know how<br />

to protect <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

property from and respond to<br />

damaging lightning strikes. Proper<br />

knowledge, individual preparation<br />

and care can prevent personal<br />

injury, limit property damage and<br />

avoid potential deaths. Provide<br />

public education talks, seminars,<br />

meetings with various groups,<br />

planning sessions, training,<br />

exercises, etc. Provide information<br />

thru websites; cell phones;<br />

newspapers, <strong>the</strong>atres, billboards,<br />

fliers, PSAs, television ads and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

multimedia sources, Provide<br />

educational <strong>material</strong>s to schools,<br />

hospitals, senior citizen centers,<br />

long-term care facilities, business &<br />

industry and individuals.<br />

Public Education: Encourage ALL<br />

citizens to have a disaster kit which<br />

contains food, water, flashlight,<br />

batteries, battery operated radio,<br />

medications, etc. Citizens in<br />

Wyandotte County face many<br />

potential hazards, some that will<br />

require <strong>the</strong>m to survive on <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

for possibly one to three days or<br />

more until additional help can arrive.<br />

Citizens need to take responsibility<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir own health, safety and<br />

welfare by planning ahead and being<br />

ready to care for <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

families and <strong>the</strong>ir neighbors during<br />

all emergencies/disasters. Continue<br />

to provide information about <strong>the</strong> true<br />

need for and contents of personal /<br />

family disaster kits through<br />

Emergency Preparedness talks &<br />

training, various media sources,<br />

literature, websites and by o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
