Learning Outcomes / Course Objectives
Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the stoichiometric terms, especially the
amount of substance and its use. They will be able to calculate simple laboratory
problems such as preparation of solutions or titrations. They will be provided with a basic
knowledge of pH, oxidation numbers and balancing of equations.
Students will acquire a sense for the significant figures of measured values and for the
importance of writing down calculations comprehensibly.
Prerequisites / Level
Basic school knowledge of chemistry.
Course Description
Introduction to the knowledge needed for the evaluation of data, measured in a chemical
laboratory:
� Basic units and their conversions
� Density
� Mass fraction
� Significant figures
� Amount of substance
� Contents of solutions, fractions and concentratios
� Dilution of solutions
� Titrations
� pH
� Oxidation numbers
Teaching Methods
Each topic will be developed in the following way:
Theoretical introduction
Demonstrated calculations (examples)
Instructions for further calculations (students' work)
Evaluation
