future. So we are very lucky because it’s looks like we are over the hump and we are on to
jumping right back where we were but it will impact the School for a all other year because
of the way the budget was set the year before. And because of that we have to make up for
the money we had to use (3/4 of a million dollar) from our reserve fund that is there for
emergency and surprises like this. We have to replenish that and feel that we are back. Most
people were very uncertain they looked the trend, the previest recession and there were
prediction all over the place, 6 months, 10 years. One thing that everybody agreed on that I
heard was that we won’t know when we were coming out of it until 6 months after we are out
of it. So how can you plan when you are not going to know until 6 months afterwards? Our
School as any indicator, people are very positive, we are back to the level of admissions that
we wanted to be at, it’s almost that we are like we were 18 months ago. If we had suspended
for a year it would have been several giant step backward. Then pickup again what you left
off you would have to start all over again and that takes years to cultivate people to get them
to understand what we are trying to do. You could not stop.
Eliza Huleatt : I think that one of the hardest thing for us when there are so
kind of recession like this and you need to reduce your budgeting, the
importance of marketing and fundraising is very hard for us, especially
because fundraising is so new here and for a lot of people in the Board and
in administration, to convince people that you can’t stop fundraising,
marketing and cultivating for a year. If we had suspended the annual fund
last year, this year we will have a 40% of participation and luckily we are
doing well. So, that was one of our challenge for our office I think,
convincing people about what we were doing was right, that we have to keep going.
Obviously we did made some changes. One of our the main thing we did differently last year
was that we used to do those very speak appeal. We had corresponding video with these little
mailing and inserts. They look very cool and they were fun and we did 5 or 6 of them a year
through the mail to all of our constituent all over the world so it’s certainly an expense in
printing and posting. But they were really fantastic. But I think last year in the winter we
realized that a much more affective thing to do was just send emails with nothing fancy with
text saying we know it’s a very hard time and thank you for keeping FASNY a priority. But
literally, it was 4 or 5 sentences just text and a link to donate. That was one sort of major
change. We have done an option to donate on certain fund. We pushed that a little bit more
because we find that people feel a little bit better knowing where their donations’ going and I
thing that made people a little better about donating. People are less targeted this year. We
encourage participation whatever the gift amount. It’s really important just to especially in
that kinf of economic climat, is just to pay attention to your own School amd so we did in an
individual basis, we knew people who had lost their job, a lot of family when the dad was
moved back to France because he was send back…people had huge family issues. So a lot
more fundraising was done maybe not in an individual basis but really looking at our
families we were going through. We stopped mailing pretty much all together last year,
which saved a lot of money. We don’t anymore mailed to faculty at all, just stuck in their
mail box at school. We don’t mail to alumni because they respond better to email.
